Scale-up and social business : a roundtable with Lo Chai at Accenture

Laurence Saquer (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Wednesday, 7 December, 2011 - 10:29

Mid-November, Lo Chai, the entrepreneur of  1001 Fontaines, was in France. On this occasion, a roundtable was organized by Accenture and danone.communities, about : "From a local solution to a global impact: how to change the scale of a model of social entrepreneurship? ".

The round table brought together several persons involved in using their specialty for social business:
• Anne-Claire Pache, Professor Chair in Philanthropy at ESSEC
• Emmanuel Faber, Vice President of Danone
• Christian NIBOUREL, CEO of Accenture France
• Martin Hirsch, President of the Agence du Service civique

To read an account of this meeting, please visit the online press clipping.

Here are two studies, conducted mainly by Anne-Claire Pache about the change of scale. Although a bit dated (2006 and 2007), these studies give a synthetic view of this issue, in particular the essential step that is the change of scale, different from replication.

« Srei Saat » women, ambassadors of 1001 Fontaines

Aurélie Bureth (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Thursday, 1 December, 2011 - 14:26

In Cambodia, it is mainly the responsibility of women to prevent health risks related to water and sanitation, very often despite unfavorable conditions and low resources.  The prevention of risks through water and hygiene depends directly on the level of education of the woman. While, in rural areas of Cambodia, illiteracy and gender inequality are still predominant (in 2005, national statistics revealed that only 7,5% of mothers had finished primary school and 53,6% of girls were literate).

The groups of women “Srei Saat” have been settled in villages where 1001 Fontaines works. The objective is to create a favorable space to facilitate exchanges and access to information.  It also aims to develop women self-confidence thanks to the group synergy.

These groups have been based on the double meaning of the word saat , that can express in Khmer, both beauty and cleanliness, depending on the context. Thus « Srei Saat » can have the meaning of a «clean women» or a « beautiful women ».

Chay Lo is rewarded as the "Social entrepreneur of the Year 2011" for Asia, by Schwab Foundation

Francois Jaquenoud (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Wednesday, 2 November, 2011 - 16:00

On the occasion of the "Annual Meeting of the New Champions" organized by the World Economic Forum in Dalian (China) and known as the "summer Davos", Schwab Foundation has announced the appointment of our association, "1001 fountains for tomorrow” through Chay Lo (our Cambodian co-founder), as " Social Entrepreneur of the Year 2011" for Asia.

We are extremely proud of this international recognition for the work we are doing for seven years in Cambodia, which now enables nearly 70,000 people in poor villages of this country, to have access to a completely healthy drinking water.
This distinction rewards for the first time an organization based in France, and it aims at promoting and encouraging the efforts of men, women and organizations dedicated to social change through the implementation of projects economically viable.

This distinction honors us, but also honors all the sponsors who allowed us to obtain these initial results. This award comes at a time when we want to spread access to safe drinking water in Cambodia but also in other country.

In this endeavor, we will continue to need support, financial skills such as friendly, for the benefit of thousands of families now have no access to drinking water, especially for their children, children who are most vulnerable towards water-borne diseases unfit for consumption.

A webreportage of 1001 Fontaines, by Shamengo, the 1000 entrepreneurs network.

Laurence Saquer (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Wednesday, 21 September, 2011 - 14:36

We are happy to welcome here the team of Shamengo. Here are some words about its meeting of Lo Chai and François Jacquenoud.

"I met FrancisJaquenoud and Lo Chay last year. We were looking for social entrepreneurs in Cambodia and we quickly discovered that 1001 Fontaines was one of the most active NGOs in the country. In the presence of Lo Chay, we shot for 3 days and learned a lot. I hope that the portrait of 2mn we have done is a good summary of their work.

In addition, we are proud to keep Lo Chay and François Jaquenoud in touch with other Shamengo pioneers, including Dr. Pathak in India, so they can develop new projects together. It is the mission of our collection of video portraits, entitled SHAMENGO: “1000 Pioneer the new world”. Our objective is to create synergies between pioneers and allow our site to serve as a hub for those who wish to act for a better world by providing new ideas, connections and horizons."

Discover 1001 Fontaines through its Google map

1001 Fontaines has created a Google map to locate its main water stations that have been set up in Cambodia. Almost all the stations throughout the country, but you “visit” them as well (put the yellow figure on one of them… maybe, you could visit Cambodia!)

Reminder: Since its creation in 2005, 1001 Fontaines has installed 42 units in Cambodian villages. And today, 25 000 people drink regularly safe drinking water thanks to these water stations.

Annual training for 1001 Fontaines entrepreneurs

Aurélie Bureth (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Wednesday, 17 August, 2011 - 09:18

This week the annual training for the entrepreneurs of 1001 Fontaines took place.

1001 Fontaines has a total of 93 entrepreneurs of different ages, backgrounds and profiles but all with the will to give access to safe drinking water to rural families. They run the stations, where the water is produced, independently and deliver the bottles of water to the families and schools daily, no matter the weather and road conditions in particular during the rainy season. Each station (50 in Cambodia) was represented by one entrepreneur.

The entrepreneurs have been trained by the team of 1001 Fontaines on sales and marketing techniques, finance, administration, water quality and entrepreneurship. This was a good opportunity for them to share experiences and good practices and for the recently recruited to be introduced to the community. They were all rewarded with a diploma to congratulate them for the good work they do in providing water in villages and signing up new customers.

1001 Fontaines was connected to the Social Business Day !

Aurélie Bureth (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Tuesday, 5 July, 2011 - 17:39

This week "1001 Fontaines" in Cambodia, joined the whole community of change actors to celebrate the day of the Social Business.

Since the creation of the project in 2004, "1001 Fountains" is constantly trying to improve and strengthen its business model, to deploy it in a sustainable way and reach as many beneficiaries.

The life of the projects of danone.communities is above all a great human adventure, driven by the energy and enthusiasm of the teams and driven by a common goal as well : improving living conditions and health. The meeting [of the Social Business Day] was encouraging for our team and shows the existence of a strong network and the spirit of exchange between projects.

While much remains to be done to achieve the millennium goals, the collection and the success of this day proved that yes, it's possible.

Thank you all for making the Social Business Day 2011 a great time of sharing !

World Water Day: Intermarché Noiseau supports 1001 Fontaines

Romain Sorin (on 1001 Fontaines )

on the Thursday, 24 March, 2011 - 09:41

(via Google Translation)

On the occasion of World Water Day March 22, several initiatives exist to remember that today, millions of people die each year from waterborne diseases. Among these initiatives, we can see efforts made by the store Intermarché Noiseau (94), who, to support the action Fountains of 1001, has developed an in-store operation to provide a month of safe drinking water for Cambodian schoolboys while buying a pack of water among different brands, of 21 to 26 March 2011. This involvement of the store shows once again that each person, in its own way, can contribute to improve water access in remote areas.

The results of the operation will be known next week. We will know then the number of months of drinking water collected by the store for Cambodian children ...
